Pharmacology and indications:
Coatal is a combination of Artemether and Lumefantrine which acts as a blood schizonticide and is indicated for the treatment of Adults and children with acute uncomplicated infections due to both sensitive and multi drug - resistant strains of P. falciparum.
Adults and children 14yrs and above: 4 tablets for a start and to be repeated after 8 hours and then 4 tablets to be taken 2 times daily for the next 2 days or 1 tablet of Coatal forte for a start and 1 tablet after 8 hours and then 1 tablet to be taken 2 times daily for the next 2 days.
Children (9 – 14 yrs): 3 tablets for a start and 3 tablets after 8 hours and then 3 tablets to be taken 2 times daily for the next 2 days.
Children (3 – 8 yrs) 2 tablets for a start, then 2 tablets after 8 hours and then 2 tablets to be taken 2 times daily for 2 days.
Children (0 – 3 yrs) 1 sachet for a start, then I sachet after 8 hours and then 1 sachet to be taken 2 times daily for the next 2 days.

Coatal is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any of the active ingredients or any of the excipients.
Its consideration: is also contraindicated in the first trimester of pregnancy.
Precautions for use:
Coatal is not recommended for prophylaxis.
Nursing Coatal should be taken with high-fat food or drinks such as milk. Patients should be encouraged to resume normal eating as soon as food can be tolerated since this improves absorption of artemether and Lumefantrine. In the event of vomiting within 1 hour of administration, a repeat dose should be taken.
The likelihood of Coatal interacting with other drugs is minimal in view of its short duration of administration and wide therapeutic index.
Coatal is generally well tolerated by adults and children, however, adverse effects might include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache and fatigue.
